It can be scary to draw your horoscope just to realize that half the houses stay empty in your natal chart.

A vacant seventh house or second house?

No marriage or money EVER? Luckily, no.

More Houses Than Planets

There are 10 planets used in astrology. (The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.) Of course, there are some additional objects like asteroids or mathematical points, but most astrologers consider the planets to be the major influence over human beings.

On the other hand, there are twelve houses in the natal chart. This means that no matter how hard you try to assign the planets evenly, there will be always at least two empty houses in the birth chart.

Each of these houses represents certain aspects of human existence (all of them are important).

But us, humans have only so much energy and only so many hours in a day. So, you can 'buy' with your time more family time, and in case, you'll have less to spend on working. Or if you choose to spend your day on working, there are few hours left for you to chill out in the evening.

Each of us have our own priorities. What's essential to me, might not be important to you at all, and vice versa,

Occupied vs. Unoccupied Houses in the Natal Chart

The natal chart reflects these individual priorities, since it is as unique as each human being is.

Empty houses in the natal chart simply require less of your focus in this lifetime.

For example, a full ninth house means that meeting foreign cultures, education (even if 'only' in the form of self-education) and searching for meaning are very important to you. An empty ninth house suggests that these activities are present in your life, but there are activities you pay more attention to you.

If you see a chart where the tenth house is empty but the fourth house is full, it gives you the idea that the chart holder is more family-oriented than focused on career.

Will there never happen anything in an empty house?

No! An empty house doesn't mean that you can't succeed the life areas connected to it.

A person with an empty second house can have plenty of money. Someone else with an empty fifth house can still have as many children as they would like.

Don't forget that planets and the universe didn't stop moving after you were born. The empty houses can become occupied through transits and secondary progressions. During these times, it's likely that some changes will take place in the corresponding life areas.

Never forget that the tangible outcomes come from your efforts. If you do nothing, even the best aspects and placements can't help you.

How To Interpret an Empty House?

This question is tricky, right? Especially when you've just started out on your astrological journey.

But don't worry, you can distill plenty of information in no time.

When interpreting any house (no matter if there are some planet-tenants or if nobody lives there), you have to look to the sign on the cusp. There is a zodiac sign on each house's cusp, and you've got to identify it and its ruling planet in the first step.

The second step is to go and find the planetary ruler of this sign. In case you need a small reminder, here's a handy list which planet to look for:
  • Aries: Mars
  • Taurus: Venus
  • Gemini: Mercury
  • Cancer: the Moon
  • Leo: the Sun
  • Virgo: Mercury
  • Libra: Venus
  • Scorpio: Pluto
  • Sagittarius: Jupiter
  • Capricorn: Saturn
  • Aquarius: Uranus
  • Pisces: Neptune
After you've found the planetary ruler, analyze its position and aspects:

Which sign is it in? Is it in a dignity?

Which house is it in? The matters of the house ruled by a planet serve the matters of the house where the planet is located in. For example, if you've the ruler of your third house in the second house, this means that you could probably make money off your communication abilities or maybe by teaching in a primary school (But as always, take the whole chart into account).

What aspects does this planet make with the rest of the chart? Which houses do the planets it's connected to rule?

Pay attention to full houses, as they will be more emphasized in this lifetime. If you've got a full tenth house, you'll put lots of efforts into your career, for example.

Each planet has its unique energy. When a planet is located in a certain house, it brings its specific energies to the matters of this house, and you can utilize them as resources. In case there is a house in your chart with three or even more planets, make sure to pay special attention to this house.
